Shoulder (Glenohumeral) Joint

“The joint connecting an upper limb or forelimb to the body. It is a ball-and-socket joint in which the head of the humerus fits into the socket of the scapula.”

— Cambridge Dictionary (2020)

The Shoulder

The shoulder is actually comprised of several joints, which together facilitate a large range of motion. In fact, the glenohumeral joint (the ball and socket joint where the top of the arm bone (humerus) articulates with the glenoid cavity of the scapula (shoulder blade)) is the most mobile joint in the body, stabilised by ligaments, tendons and muscles. However, due to the very nature of the joint, the shoulder can be prone to injury, instability and pain.

Pain in your shoulder can be really debilitating and upsetting, with symptom severity ranging from a minor activity-related ache, to severe constant pain at rest and sleep disturbances. Due to the complexity of the shoulder, there are several potential underlying reasons for pain in the region, and it is important to get it assessed and treated thoroughly and comprehensively.

Common conditions I see in practice include:

  • Rotator cuff injuries - tendinopathies, degenerative tears, impingement syndromes, generalised weakness

  • Multi-directional instability, recurrent subluxations and dislocations

  • Arthritis related pain and loss of range of movement

  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)

  • Traumatic shoulder injuries, including labral tears and fractures

  • Post-operative shoulder rehabilitation
