Ankle and Foot - Sprains & Other Injuries

Feet and ankles are exposed to large dynamic and variable forces when weight-bearing, and an injury to either area can result in debilitating pain, inability to weight-bear, and sometimes lengthy and frustrating periods of time in rehabilitation, and possibly surgery. Furthermore, it is estimated that up to 30% of people who suffer acute ankle injuries, will develop long-term joint problems such as recurrent sprains and instability.

Due to the increasing levels of participation in recreational and competitive sports over recent decades, there has also been an increase in the prevalence of traumatic and atraumatic ankle and foot injuries. There are a multitude of structures in this region that are vulnerable to repetitive and traumatic stress and strain, including joint surfaces and capsules, cartilage, bone, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. Here are a few injuries I frequently assess and manage at Torque Physio:

  • Lateral, medial and high ankle sprains

  • Stress fractures of bones in the foot

  • Morton’s neuroma

  • Plantar plate tears

  • Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Traumatic fractures of the ankle and foot

  • Peroneal and tibialis posterior tendon tears and disorders

  • Chronic ankle instability

  • Anterior and posterior ankle joint impingement syndromes

  • Bursitis

  • Fat pad irritation

  • Various nerve entrapments

A thorough assessment and understanding of the complex biomechanics and structure of both the foot and ankle is therefore essential in ensuring of any foot or ankle injury. At Torque Physio, I like to work with my patients to establish a clear and comprehensive history of injury or dysfunction so that I can implement a safe and effective strategy to decrease pain, improve function, progressively return to full training, and design an ongoing injury prevention program to minimise the risk of developing chronic instability and pain or sustaining a similar injury.
