Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain

If you’re visiting this page, chances are you either have, or have had a case of back pain before. Painful, debilitating, frustrating and sometimes maybe even a bit scary - pain in the lower back can really upset your day to day life and activities. You are not alone. Up to 85% of the population (myself included!) suffer from an episode of back pain in their lifetime, and it is one of the most common conditions I see in practice. (read more here on my blog page)

Pain in your lower back can present in a number of ways - ranging from a slight aching or stiffness, a sharp stabbing pain, pain radiating into the buttocks or legs, or shooting, electric shock like pain that takes your breath away. It can come on slowly and steadily over a few days or weeks, or stop you in your tracks making it difficult to stand or move normally.

Whilst there are a number of pain sensitive structures in the lumbar spine (lower part of your back), pain may not necessarily be due to a pathological process, or abnormality. Rather, pain severity and irritability may be influenced by a multitude of factors, including physical, psychological, mechanical and environmental factors.

Generally speaking, most cases of low back pain are self-resolving and do not require medical imaging for an exact diagnosis, or a referral to a doctor or specialist.
